1. What is the Normal Run Time of a refrigerator?
Ans:     For a freezer to maintain a desired temperature of 0 degrees F or a combination refrigerator-freezer to maintain a 5 degrees F freezer and 35 - 40 degrees fresh food temperature, the compressor will usually run more than 50% of the time. Refrigerators have smaller, more powerful, high-speed compressors that generally cost less to operate than those in older refrigerators. These compressors are designed to run 80 % to 90% of the time. This makes them more energy efficient because the greatest amount of energy used when the compressor cycles on.      

  • Factors that contributes to run time:
  • In extremely hot, humid areas, run time may approach 100%. Loading the refrigerator or freezer with a large amount of food, especially warm or hot foods, will also add to the run time. Hot foods should be allowed to cool before being placed in the cabinet.
  • Another significant factor that contributes to run time is an empty or lightly loaded freezer. Because no insulation material is perfect, air alone does not retain cold. >An empty refrigerator or freezer must run more to maintain temperatures low enough to satisfy the temperature control and turn the compressor off. A freezer should be at least 3/4 full to maintain proper temperatures and reduce time.
  • Door openings contribute significantly to the run time of any refrigerator. When the door is opened, some of the heavy cold air slides out of the cabinet, pulling warm air in at the top.
  • Make sure that ALL bins and shelves, in freezer and fresh-food section, are properly seated in the refrigerator. Ensure that large trays, platters, and food items (like pizza boxes) are arranged so that they do not interfere with the door closing. (If freezer door, make sure no ice is behind the ice bin, and if present ensure bottom freezer basket is on its rollers)
  • Check door gaskets - are they sealing properly?
  • Check for blocked air vents in freezer section (any grill work on back wall).
  • Be sure the refrigerator is installed with proper air clearance. See the features text for recommended air clearances. On models that do NOT have a Never Clean condenser, check condenser coils, dirty coils will result in long run times.
    Always disconnect power from breaker/fuse box before cleaning.
  • Make sure interior lights are off when door is closed.      
  • Heavy frost build up (1/2" or more) on non-defrost models will cause long run times.
  • The below are all exceptions to the above:
  • All 14 and 16 cu. ft. (TBX/CTX models vs.TBF models of past) will have an average run time of between 40 and 52% as do compact models,(TA2,4,6).
    Cycles defrost and single door models will run slightly less, 30-60%.
    Chest & Upright freezers run 75% to 90% of the time.

    2. My refrigerator is noisy, why?
    Ans:     The normal operation of your refrigerator will cause some sound. The following list contains sounds that are normal.
         A Chirping/barking/woof/howl sound can sometimes be heard as the damper door opens/closes.
         A change in fan speed as the refrigerator responds to changes in temperature due to door opening.
         A clicking/tic toc noise can be heard when the defrost timer switches on and off.
         A click can be heard when the temperature control unit turns the unit on and off.
         A boiling, gurgling, or knocking sound can be heard when the unit is running. This is caused by the circulation of refrigerant.
         Gurgling sound in the door. This sound can be heard just after the door is closed because of the water in drain tube trap area. It can last several seconds.
         A drip may be heard when defrost water is dripping into the pan beneath the refrigerator.
         The icemaker will make a loud noise when cubes are dropped into the bucket.
         A hum or click can be heard when the icemaker fills with water. This sound may be heard once or multiple times.
         A cracking or popping sound can be heard when evaporator coils on Top Mount No Frost models are cooling after defrost.
         Buzzing noises can be heard after getting water from the door dispenser. The noise should not last longer than 7 seconds.
         A snapping sound will be heard about 4 seconds after removing a glass from a dispenser. This is the sound of the dispenser chute closing.
         A clicking noise may be heard after a power shortage. This stems from the compressor trying to re-start itself. The noise could last for 3 to 5 minutes.
         A hissing, sizzling, buzzing, or arching noise may be heard on self-defrost models. This is produced when water drips on defrost heaters. Any other sounds may require a service technician for diagnosis

    3. There is water under the vegetable and fruit pans in my refrigerator. Why?
    Ans:     If water appears on the floor in front of your refrigerator or under your vegetable bins once or twice a day, it could be due to a clog in the defrost drain tube. On some models, this can be a do-it-yourself fix. Below are some suggestions:

  • Side by side refrigerators:

  •      The usual evidence of a clogged drain in a side by side is the discovery of ice under the bottom basket in the freezer compartment, in addition to a puddle of water on the floor when it runs out the freezer door. Some side-by-side models have the defrost drain hole located on the back wall of the freezer, just up from where the floor slopes up to the back, in the center. In some models it is behind a plastic panel held in place by a screw. Remove screw and panel, and the drain hole will be visible.
         Flush out the drain hole with a solution of 1 tsp. baking soda and 2 cups of hot tap water in a meat/turkey (bulb) baster. When clear, you will hear water running down into the drain pan below.
         This does not apply to Built In products. Built In products require qualified service. Call 4466 4466 for the service.
  • Top freezer refrigerators:

  •      Water under the vegetable pans is the usual evidence of a clogged defrost drain tube. Most top freezer models require some disassembly to access the defrost drain tube.

  • Bottom freezer refrigerators:

  •      If you have a clogged drain tube, you might see ice on the floor of the freezer of a bottom mount model. If this is the case, we recommend you contact service.

    4. Why does frost accumulation on freezer walls or floor?
    Ans:     To minimize the possibility of electric shock, unplug this appliance from the power supply before attempting any maintenance or cleaning.
         High humidity.
         Heavy door openings.
         Warm food load.
         Packages resting against the rear wall.
         Packages keeping the door open.

         After correcting these causes, the frost accumulation will go away in a few days. You may need service if:
         The door gaskets not sealing properly or are torn or split. Fan in the freezer not running.

    5. How do I clean the inside of my refrigerator?
    Ans:     Note: It is best to clean the refrigerator at least once a year. To clean it properly, follow these steps:
         Turn the temperature control to OFF.
         Unplug the refrigerator.
         Mix together one to two tablespoon of baking soda and one quart of water.
         Wipe down the walls of the refrigerator with this solution, then rinse it with water.
         Wipe the refrigerator dry.
         Follow this same procedure with cleaning of door gaskets, vegetable drawers, ice storage bin, and all of the other plastic parts, glass shelves, and wire shelves. Be careful not to take glass from the refrigerator and place under hot water. The extreme temperature change may cause the glass to break.

         After cleaning the door gasket, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the door gasket at the hinge side. This will keep the gasket pliable.

         On 30 cubic foot side by side models, the matte plastic liner may be cleaned with a bleach free non-abrasive cleaner. Do not use any abrasive cleaners. Do not place any plastic parts or glass shelves in the automatic dishwasher.

    6. There is an odor in my refrigerator. What can I do?
    Ans:     Your refrigerator does not contain any mechanical parts that will produce an odor or cause a bad taste in your food or ice cubes. When the refrigerator is new, there is a plastic odor because most components inside are made plastic. This odor will dissipate with time. Odors can be difficult to get rid of because the refrigerator is an enclosed area.
         To clean the walls and shelves we recommend a solution of:
         One tablespoon of baking soda
         One quart of warm water
         Note: Do not use bleach or ammonia. This can crack or damage the refrigerator liner. Also, cleaning products with a lemon scent are not recommended because the lemon odor may be permanently absorbed in the plastic parts of the refrigerator and may affect the food. You can spray under the refrigerator with Lysol spray for odor also. Please consult the Owner's Manual for further cleaning instructions.

         The odors or tastes come from food items placed in the refrigerator or freezer, such as unwrapped food or spills on the shelves or walls.
         THE recommends you check all foods to make sure they are covered and airtight.
         You may also use Smell BeGone 12 fl ozs. (wx10x25), a deodorizer spray that is unscented, nontoxic, nonstaining and non-allergenic which destroys odors and kills bacteria without leaving a fragrance behind.
         Other methods for removing odors and tastes include:
    Place a box of baking soda in the fresh food compartment and the freezer compartment to absorb odors. Replace the baking soda according to the instructions on the box.
    Activated charcoal is available in drug stores, or more commonly, in pet stores. Spread the activated charcoal in a small pan (such as a jellyroll pan) and place it in the refrigerator and/or the freezer. When the charcoal loses its effectiveness, it can be heated on low heat in the oven for a couple of hours to rejuvenate it. Activated charcoal is not the same as charcoal briquettes used for cooking on a grill.
    Vanilla extract can be used to freshen the fresh food compartment, but not the freezer (because it will freeze). Place it in a small dish or saucer and place in the fresh food compartment for about 3 weeks.

    7. My refrigerator is too Cold & Freezes Food too much what should I do?

  • Side by Side Models

  • If foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
         If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
         If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • Freezer on Top Models

  • First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
         Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
         If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

    8. Why does the door of the refrigerator swigs too much?
    Ans:     Refrigerator door stops help prevent damage to adjacent walls, cabinets, and the refrigerator door. They allow the door to open wide enough for normal pan removal. They are included on all models, but are not in plain sight. They are located in the hinge system at the bottom of the door.
         Door stops are set to 150 degrees can not be adjusted. Monogram Models have a 140 degree door stop and are adjustable.

    9. The ice dispenser in refrigerator is leaking water, why?
    Ans:     If your icemaker is leaking water into your ice bucket or onto your floor, several things could be the source of the problem. Check the following items:
         Be sure the water line fittings are secure.
         Check the water valve for leaks.
         See if water is leaking from the fill tube extension.
         See if the defrost water drain is cracked or overflowing.
         Check for water on the exterior of the refrigerator case.
         See if the refrigerator is leveled.

  • Note: If the icemaker is leaking water onto the floor of your home, turn off the water supply to your icemaker. This line is usually located under the kitchen sink. Locate the cold water line under the sink, and look for a small 1/4" copper line attached to it. Where these two lines meet, there will be a saddle valve. Sticking out from this valve will be a post with a wire running through it. This is the shut-off valve. Turn this valve in a clockwise manner until it stops. This will shut off the water to the icemaker. If the water line is not connected under the sink, it will be in the basement or crawl space.

  • 10. My refrigerator is leaking, sweating, or collecting moisture between the doors?
    Ans:     Moisture Between Doors If you are experiencing moisture between your Refrigerator doors, check to see if your refrigerator has an Energy Saver feature.

  • If your refrigerator has an Energy Saver feature, wipe the surface dry, and turn the Energy Saver OFF, or Set

  •      Here If Moisture Appears On Exterior.
         Strip between the doors feels warm.
         The energy saver feature off controls anti-sweat heaters that are around the freezer section walls or between the fresh food doors, which are designed to prevent moisture from forming on your cabinet exterior and between the doors. The energy saver feature gives you the option of turning your heaters off to cut energy cost. It helps cut operating costs when set in the Normal, or on, or Energy Saver position.
         You should also check your fresh food and freezer doors for splits in the gasket. Gaps in the gaskets are also a problem.
         Moisture could be a result of improper clearances between the sides or top of the refrigerator and adjacent cabinets. Consult your use & care manual for proper clearances.
